Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He was born in January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. King became known for his public speaking ability and was part of the school's debate team. He became the youngest assistant manager of a newspaper delivery station for the Atlanta Journal in 1942 at age 13. During his junior year, he won first prize in an oratorical contest sponsored by the Negro Elks Club in Dublin, Georgia. At age 15, King passed the exam and entered Morehouse College. King began doctoral studies in systematic theology at Boston University and received his Ph.D. degree on June 5, 1955, at age 26. On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence. He was assassinated on April 4 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee when he was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign. King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a holiday in numerous cities and states beginning in 1971. He spent all his life for civil rights and world peace.
